How the answers are built
Each chapter opens with the checklist the question is really testing. A few from this pack:
- A relational table is a set of rows with named attributes, and SQL describes what you want rather than how to get it.
- WHERE filters rows before grouping and before projection, which is why you cannot select an aggregate there.
- An inner join returns intersection rows, a left join returns all left rows with nulls where unmatched.
- Grouping produces one row per distinct combination of the grouping expressions.
- A window function computes across a set of related rows without collapsing them, so detail is preserved.
- UNION removes duplicates, UNION ALL does not, and the choice can change result counts by orders of magnitude.
Questions this pack covers
- What does it mean that SQL is declarative rather than procedural?
- Why does SQL treat rows as a bag instead of a set?
- Why can a WHERE clause not reference an alias defined in the same SELECT list?
- What does three valued logic do to a negated predicate?
- Why does a many to many join multiply rows in both directions?
- What is the fan out trap, and how do you detect it?
- What happens when you aggregate a grouped query a second time?
- Why is COUNT(column) different from COUNT(*)?
Each one is answered in full in the pack, with the reasoning written out rather than a bullet list.
About this pack
- How many questions?
- 360, spread across 20 topics, written out in full across 286 pages.
- Do the answers just list keywords?
- No. Each answer is written as prose, because that is what you have to reproduce when someone asks you the question.
