How the answers are built
Each chapter opens with the checklist the question is really testing. A few from this pack:
A topic is a name over one or more partitions, and each partition is a single append only log with its own sequence of offsets.
A record with a key is routed by hashing that key, which is the mechanism behind per entity ordering.
`acks=0` returns as soon as the record reaches the socket, so a leader change can lose it with no error reported.
linger.ms and batch.size together decide how long a record waits and how large a request becomes, which is the main latency for throughput trade.
A poll returns records from the partitions assigned to you, and a consumer that stops polling is removed from its group after the session timeout.
At least once delivery means your handler must tolerate seeing the same record again, which happens whenever a crash lands between processing and committing.
Questions this pack covers
What actually lives on disk inside a Kafka topic
How a partition count caps your consumer parallelism
How the default partitioner chooses a destination partition
What ordering guarantee does a message key actually buy
What does acks zero actually promise the producer
How acks all differs from acks one during a leader change
How batch size and linger time trade latency for throughput
What batch size does to memory on the broker
Each one is answered in full in the pack, with the reasoning written out rather than a bullet list.
About this pack
How many questions?
360, spread across 20 topics, written out in full across 272 pages.
Do the answers just list keywords?
No. Each answer is written as prose, because that is what you have to reproduce when someone asks you the question.
