- Embedding versus referencing
- BSON types and value semantics
- Query selectors and the query language
- Projection, sorting and cursors
- Index structure and single field indexes
- Compound indexes and index strategy
- Aggregation pipeline stages
- Advanced pipelines and writing results back
- Schema validation with JSON Schema
- Write concern and durability
- Read concern, isolation and read preference
- Transactions and multi document atomicity
- Replication, elections and the oplog
- Sharding, shard keys and the balancer
- Connection strings and connection pooling
- Driver or ODM, and how the driver works
- Schema evolution and data migrations
- Explain plans and performance work
- Backup and restore
How the answers are built
Each chapter opens with the checklist the question is really testing. A few from this pack:
- A document is an ordered map of field names to BSON values, with optional nested arrays and a mandatory _id.
- Embed when the child is always read with its parent, is bounded in number and is never queried on its own.
- BSON adds types JSON lacks: ObjectId, 64 bit integers, dates, decimals, binary values, regular expressions and code.
- A filter document is a conjunction of field conditions, combined explicitly with $and, $or and $nor.
- A projection chooses returned fields and can compute new ones with aggregation expressions.
- An index is an ordered B-tree over values plus the record identifier, which is what makes range scans cheap.
Questions this pack covers
- At the byte level, what does a MongoDB document actually contain?
- How does MongoDB generate the mandatory _id field, and what does an ObjectId encode?
- What actually decides whether you embed a relationship or reference it?
- How many documents should ever live inside one embedded array?
- Which BSON type does a JavaScript number become when the driver writes it?
- Why does mixing integers and doubles cause trouble with equality tests?
- How do you express a conjunction of several conditions in one filter?
- What does dot notation reach inside an embedded document?
Each one is answered in full in the pack, with the reasoning written out rather than a bullet list.
About this pack
- How many questions?
- 360, spread across 20 topics, written out in full across 249 pages.
- Do the answers just list keywords?
- No. Each answer is written as prose, because that is what you have to reproduce when someone asks you the question.
- How do I get it?
- Pay once and the PDF arrives by email immediately, with a signed download link.
- Can I get it refunded?
- Yes, if it is not what you expected. See the refund policy.
